A tall, robed figure with a radiant halo stands in a vast vaulted space-station hall as dark, spidery tendrils creep along the wall behind it, in a dramatic etched style.

The Vorlons' question and the Shadows', Babylon 5

Who are you? What do you want?

— Babylon 5 · 1994

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

For three seasons the two ancient powers had tested the younger races with one question each, using it as a recruiting pitch and a weapon. Sheridan's reply breaks the trap by making the questioners answer, and their silence is the argument. Fans quote the pair as a challenge to any movement that demands loyalty without examining itself.

Spoilers for Babylon 5Show the scene

From Babylon 5 season 4, "Into the Fire" (3 February 1997, written by J. Michael Straczynski). At the climax of the Shadow War at Coriana VI, a Vorlon and a Shadow appear before Captain Sheridan and Delenn and offer one last chance to choose between them. Sheridan turns their own questions back on them: the Vorlons always ask "Who are you?" and the Shadows "What do you want?". Neither can answer, and Delenn says it shows they have lost track of themselves. Missiles then fired at Sheridan's White Star are intercepted by other ships, showing the First Ones have taken his side.
