Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
This is the show's argument in one sentence: a person is whoever the contract says is one. It lands as the cruelest line in the series because it comes from Helly's own face. It has become shorthand for corporate dehumanisation, quoted by fans half as a joke and half as a warning about consent and work.

Spoilers for SeveranceShow the scene
Severance, season 1, episode 4, 'The You You Are' (2022). Helly R., the new innie on the severed floor at Lumon, has threatened to cut off her own fingers unless she is allowed to record a resignation for her outie. She records it, but her outie denies it. Lumon plays Helly a recorded reply: her outie says she understands Helly is unhappy with the life she has been given, but we all have to accept reality, and states that she is a person and Helly is not. She also warns Helly off harming her fingers.
