The work is mysterious and important.

Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It sounds like a motto and works as a shrug: Mark has been told the work matters, doesn't know what it is, and has stopped asking. The phrase has become the all-purpose description of any job, project or meeting where nobody can say what the point is.

Spoilers for SeveranceShow the scene
Severance, season 1, episode 4, 'The You You Are' (2022). In the Macrodata Refinement room on the severed floor, Helly confronts Mark over the hand-drawn map of the office that Petey left behind, and over his reluctance to take it seriously. Mark answers with the company line that the work is mysterious and important, and says they should deal with the uncertainty as Kier would have wanted, together as a family. Helly retorts that she could not be less interested in being his family, and Mark shreds the map.
