Sherlock Holmes

The game is on!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Sherlock Holmes is at his happiest when a puzzle starts, and this is the show's mission statement in five words: the world is dull, a mystery is on, and he is thrilled. It also marks a quiet change in his life, since he now has a friend to share it. Updating the old line to a modern one gave fans a new catchphrase that the series kept reusing.

Spoilers for SherlockShow the scene

In "A Study in Pink", the first episode of Sherlock (BBC One, 25 July 2010), Sherlock Holmes has just met his future flatmate John Watson and invited him to see more of his world. Within minutes the police have another case of the so-called serial suicides, and Sherlock, bounding with excitement, announces the hunt to his landlady Mrs Hudson, sweeping out of 221B Baker Street with John to the crime scene. The wording is a modern take on the line the screen Holmes traditionally says, "The game is afoot".
