One man in a mustard shirt, brown tie and glasses jabs a finger at a coworker dressed exactly like him, who lounges at a desk with a bobblehead and a beet.

Dwight

Identity theft is not a joke, Jim! Millions of families suffer every year!

— The Office (U.S.) • 2005

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is Dwight's absolute seriousness. A harmless impression becomes a crime against millions of families, and Dwight cannot see how silly his claim is. The line is a favourite for any trivial annoyance blown out of proportion, and it is also quoted as a deadpan warning about identity theft.

Spoilers for The Office (U.S.)Show the scene

The line closes the cold open of "Product Recall" (season 3, episode 21, April 2007). Jim has found a pair of glasses at a drug store for four dollars and built a full Dwight Schrute costume for eleven, then acts the part at his desk, copying Dwight's flat delivery and his claims about bears and beets. Dwight first pretends to be flattered, then snaps with the line. Jim answers by calling for Michael, and Dwight, following the joke, calls for Michael as well, so the argument lands on the boss.
