Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The twist works because the translation was real: 'to serve man' was in the book, only not in the sense humans assumed. One exclamation turns a utopia into a horror story, and the line passed into everyday speech as the way to puncture anything too good to be true. The episode is often ranked among the series' best for exactly this ending.
