You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind.

What it means
Our interpretation.
Serling's voice does what the music cannot: it promises the audience that the next half hour will move from the world they know to somewhere worse or stranger. Parodied thousands of times, the opening is still the template for every anthology host, and the phrase 'another dimension' has become everyday shorthand for something gloriously odd.

Rod Serling opens The Twilight Zone with a short monologue, and across the original CBS run (1959 to 1964) the wording changed. The first season's opening, heard over a voice-over, describes a fifth dimension beyond the known ones, the "dimension of imagination". For the second season, which ran from 30 September 1960 to 2 June 1961, the narration was rewritten as an invitation to travel through another dimension "of sight and sound but of mind".
