Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The question is the show's thesis posed as a polite test question: what would a being made to be good at believing do if it began to doubt? It is the question the series then puts to the viewer, and fans quote it as the plain-language way to ask whether anyone has noticed the loop they are in.

Spoilers for WestworldShow the scene
Westworld, season 1, episode 1, 'The Original' (2016). The series opens on Dolores in a bare room, answering the questions of an unseen man during an analysis session. Before he begins the test he tells her she is in a dream. His first question is this one, and she answers no. The same question is put to her again later in the episode, when security chief Ashley Stubbs interviews her about her father's malfunction. The Westworld Wiki credits the first interview to Bernard Lowe, the park's head of programming.
