Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Gendo offers an ultimatum where Shinji needs explanation and reassurance. The words make the gap between a military emergency and a frightened child’s needs painfully clear.

In Episode 1, Gendo orders Shinji to decide whether to pilot Eva Unit-01 while NERV prepares for the Angel attack. English translations vary between doing it and piloting it, but preserve the abrupt command to act or leave. Fans compress the situation into “Get in the robot, Shinji,” which is shorthand rather than Gendo’s actual dialogue.
