One Piece is real!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

For decades the One Piece was a rumour, a myth the Government dismissed. Whitebeard, the strongest man alive and the rival of Gol D. Roger, is the one person with the standing to declare it real, and he does it with his dying breath. The line launched the New Age of pirates in the story, and fans treat it as the series' biggest promise: the dream is real.

The last words of Edward Newgate, Whitebeard, in the Summit War of Marineford: chapter 576 of the manga and anime episode 485. Blackbeard's crew has turned up with newly recruited fighters, and Whitebeard fights on with wounds from the whole war. After Blackbeard's gang gang up on him, he tells his sons he is sorry, thanks them, and says the treasure is real. He dies on his feet, the narrator observes, with no scar on the tattooed back that carries his jolly roger. Within the story the line tells readers that the One Piece exists.
