Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is deliberately close to meaningless: pseudo-Latin that sounds like an incantation, which suits a hero whose conspiracy starts as a delusion. Fans gloss it as "the mind agrees" or "the mind is congruous", though the grammar is wrong. The spelling is its own small argument: most anime localisations print "Congroo", but the visual novel's English release uses "Kongroo", and that K is the canon spelling.

The phrase is first heard in the opening episode of Steins;Gate, where Rintaro Okabe, a student who plays at being a mad scientist called Hououin Kyouma, ends a phone call with it. It is his password for the "Organization" he insists is hunting him, and the episode shows that his phone is switched off, so the other end of the call does not exist. It stays his sign-off all series. In the final episodes, the video D-Mail comes from an address whose first letters stand for "Steins Gate - El Psy Kongroo".
