Mayuri Shiina

Tutturu~!

— Steins;Gate · 2011

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a greeting with no dictionary meaning, which is the point: Mayuri's whole character is warmth and softness, and the sound alone says so. Fans use it as a cute hello and a nod to the series, and it is the first thing most people associate with her before the story turns dark.

Mayuri Shiina's greeting is her catchphrase in Steins;Gate (2011): a chirpy, sing-song "Tutturu~!" with which she hails people, voiced by Kana Hanazawa in Japanese. She first appears in episode 1, "Prologue of the Beginning and the End", with her childhood friend Rintaro Okabe in Akihabara on the day of the Radio Hall press conference. The English dub, with Ashly Burch as Mayuri, keeps it as "Tutturu". The usual romanisation uses the double t.
