The Tempest  ·  1623

William Shakespeare

Ariel (singing): Full fathom five thy father lies; Of his bones are coral made; Those are pearls that were his eyes: Nothing of him that doth fade But doth suffer a sea-change Into something rich and strange.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Ariel’s song describes a body transformed by the sea into coral and pearls. Decay becomes a change into unfamiliar richness rather than simple disappearance. The beautiful imagery belongs to the song’s account; it does not by itself establish that the reported death has actually occurred.
