A. A. Milne wrote the Pooh books for his son Christopher Robin, borrowing the names of the boy's actual stuffed animals; the bear himself was named after a Canadian black bear at London Zoo called Winnie. The gentle aphorisms quoted from the Hundred Acre Wood are a curious case: many of the most-shared 'Pooh quotes' online were never written by Milne at all, but coined for Disney adaptations or invented outright for greetings cards. The 1926 originals entered the US public domain in 2022.
