Captain Janeway

There's coffee in that nebula.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A captain's reason for risking the ship is also a caffeine joke, which is exactly why Janeway landed as a more human commander than her predecessors. The line has outlived the episode: an astronaut tweeted it from the space station in 2015, a nod from the real frontier to the fictional one.

Spoilers for Star Trek: VoyagerShow the scene

In "The Cloud" (Star Trek: Voyager, first season, 1995), Voyager is stranded in the Delta Quadrant and rationing replicator power. Janeway has been cut off from her coffee, and Neelix's substitute looks more like tar. After she escapes his mess-hall offering, Chakotay reports on the bridge that a nebula rich in omicron particles could top up the ship's reserves. Janeway orders a new course, joking that there is coffee in that nebula. Inside, shields and reserves begin to fail. In 2015 an astronaut on the International Space Station tweeted the line.
