Mrs Doyle, seen from behind in her cardigan and apron, holds out a cup of tea to Father Jack, who recoils in his armchair with one hand raised, in a brown 1970s sitting room.

Feck off, cup!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Jack telling a cup of tea where to go is the show's humour at its simplest: the angriest man in the house takes on an inanimate object, and Mrs Doyle hears it as affection. Fans quote it at anything that has annoyed them just by existing.

Spoilers for Father TedShow the scene

In the series premiere, "Good Luck, Father Ted" (21 April 1995), Mrs Doyle offers the priests tea. Father Jack answers the offer with a snarled "Tea? Feck!". She pours him a cup anyway and asks what he says to it, and he tells the cup where to go. He shouts it a second time, then throws the cup against the wall, smashing it. Mrs Doyle cheerfully decides he loves his cup of tea.
