Cartoon Father Ted stands in the sitting room with a hand on his chest, defending himself, while Dougal looks up from the sofa unconvinced; a Lourdes holy-water bottle sits on the mantelpiece.

Father Ted

That money was just resting in my account before I moved it on!

— Father Ted  ·  1995

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Ted's best excuse is the line that gives him away: nobody leaves money resting in an account for years without noticing. Fans use it as the all-purpose defence for any dodgy handling of funds, usually in Ted's pained, over-reasonable voice.

Spoilers for Father TedShow the scene

In "Old Grey Whistle Theft" (Series 2, 29 March 1996), the island is in uproar over a stolen whistle and Ted is trying to teach Dougal right from wrong. Dougal tires himself out listing murder, swearing and lying, and then Ted adds stealing. Dougal points out that Ted is allowed to, meaning the Lourdes money, the reason Bishop Brennan sent Ted to Craggy Island. Ted gives his defence, and Dougal says it was resting a long time.
