Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A perfect picture of protest with no idea what it is against: two priests chanting at a cinema because a bishop told them to, with a polite warning tacked on. The pair of phrases walked off Craggy Island and onto real banners, and they still turn up whenever a march needs a gently self-mocking slogan.

Spoilers for Father TedShow the scene

In "The Passion of St Tibulus" (Channel 4, May 1995, Series 1), Bishop Len Brennan orders Ted and Dougal to protest a banned erotic film that has slipped onto Craggy Island's one cinema through a loophole. They turn up outside with placards, and Ted's "Down with this sort of thing" is answered by Dougal's "Careful now". The chanting only makes the islanders curious about the film, so the protest backfires. The writers had planned to air this episode first, before choosing "Good Luck, Father Ted" as the opener.
