Father Jack

I love my brick!

— Father Ted • 1995

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

For a man who communicates in roars, a declaration of love is a rare event, and the show immediately punishes anyone who believes it. The brick became a Jack icon, and fans quote the line affectionately for any beloved, slightly violent object.

Spoilers for Father TedShow the scene

In "Speed 3" (Father Ted, series 3, 1998), Mrs Doyle leaves a brick in the middle of the sitting room after reading a decorating tip, and Ted trips on it. Father Jack adopts it as a pet, and Mrs Doyle explains to Ted that it needs no feeding or vet. Jack announces his love for it, Ted wonders aloud if they are seeing a gentler side of him, and Jack then hurls it at Ted and knocks him out. The brick later helps save Dougal from the booby-trapped milk float.
