Three bishops in purple sit on a floral sofa with teacups facing Father Jack, scrubbed and upright in his armchair, while Father Ted hovers behind him astonished, in a 1970s parochial sitting room drawn as a cartoon strip panel.

That would be an ecumenical matter.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line means nothing and fits everything: Jack has been drilled to say it, and it lands as a bishop-pleasing remark in a conversation it has no business being in. Fans use it to wave away any topic too tangled to argue, delivered with the same blank confidence.

Spoilers for Father TedShow the scene

In "Tentacles of Doom" (Series 2, 22 March 1996), three bishops are due on Craggy Island to upgrade the Holy Stone of Clonrichert to a Class 2 relic. Ted fears what Father Jack might say, so he gives him an elocution lesson with a board of simple phrases and promises drink as the reward. When the bishops arrive, a cleaned-up Jack answers Bishop Facks's complaint about bearded lefty newspaper writers with the phrase, to Ted's astonishment, and the bishops are impressed.
