Leia

Aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper?

— Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope ‧ 1977

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A supposed mark of authority becomes an opportunity for a joke about height. By asking whether someone is tall enough for the role, the speaker refuses to sound impressed. The small, pointed question cuts its target down to size instead of granting them importance.
