A hunched armoured figure rises from a pool of golden light on ruined church steps, a great glowing tree on the horizon.

Arise now, ye Tarnished. Ye dead, who yet live.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It works as a summons, a title card and a dare. "Ye dead, who yet live" tells you what you are before you have pressed a button: a failure the world has not finished with. Fans quote it as a rallying cry for the start of any new run, and as shorthand for FromSoftware's gift for making a myth sound ancient from its first sentence, in an old English register that the whole game then keeps up.

These are the first words of Elden Ring (2022), spoken by an unnamed narrator over the game's introductory cinematic. The call goes out to the Tarnished, exiles stripped of the Erdtree's grace by Queen Marika and driven from the Lands Between. After the Elden Ring is shattered and the demigods fight over its shards, long-lost grace beckons the Tarnished home to claim it. The narration goes on to single out one Tarnished of no renown, told to cross the fog, stand before the Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord, and that nameless exile is the player.
