Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A series about a dying Superman keeps coming back to one idea: his real power is that he believes in people. Here he shows it with a sentence instead of a punch. It lands because it is plain, said by someone who can lift a planet to someone who cannot step back from a ledge. Fans quote it as the heart of the book, often with no context at all.

Spoilers for All-Star SupermanShow the scene

In "Neverending", the tenth issue of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's series, Superman's last day on Earth is told out of order as he works through his to-do list: a will, a new home for Kandor, a goodbye to Lois. Partway through, he hears a cry for help from miles away. A teenager named Regan is standing on a roof, about to jump, while her doctor shouts down the phone that he is on his way. Superman gets there first and comforts her.
