Easy, miss. I've got you. / You've got me? Who's got you?

What it means

Our interpretation.

The exchange says a lot about who Superman is: he saves first and makes the joke afterward, and Lois's retort is the audience's own disbelief. The exchange turns a flying stunt into character, and the quiet reassurance is the hope the film sells. It remains one of the film's best-loved lines.

Spoilers for SupermanShow the scene

In Superman (1978), the day the newly costumed hero first shows himself to Metropolis, a helicopter accident at the Daily Planet building throws Lois Lane toward the street. As the crowd below gasps, Superman flies in and catches her mid-fall. He steadies her with a gentle line about having got her. Lois, flustered, asks who has got him, and he flies away after telling her he is a friend. It is the first time the film shows Clark Kent's alter ego in public.
