Doom's (1993) easiest difficulty setting

I'm too young to die.

— Doom · 1993

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The easiest difficulty is a cry of panic, and the game makes you say it to pick it. That self-mockery turned the lowest rung into a rite of passage and a badge of honest cowardice, a joke the player gets to be in on. Thirty years on, the series still lets newcomers begin with the same plea.

I'm too young to die is the first and easiest of Doom's five skill levels, at the top of the menu when a new game begins. The wiki table gives its code name as sk_baby: monsters appear in the same numbers as on the second setting, the player takes half normal damage from monsters and the environment, and ammo pickups give double. Hey, not too rough, Hurt me plenty, Ultra-Violence and Nightmare! follow. The PlayStation and Saturn ports rename the easiest setting I am a wimp, while Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal bring back I'm too young to die as their first tier.
