Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Five letters that gave a generation of players a night off from dying. The code has become a symbol of the cheat-code era, a secret keystroke handed from friend to friend, and it still turns up as an Easter egg and a joke in software and speedrun talk. Typing it feels like speaking a password into the dark.

Spoilers for DoomShow the scene

IDDQD is the Doom cheat code for god mode in id Software's Doom (1993). Typed during play, it sets the player's health to 100 percent and makes them immune to damage; the game's message calls this degreelessness. Cheat codes are switched off on the Nightmare! skill level, except for IDCLEV and IDDT, and a few damaging floors can still hurt an invulnerable player. The ID in the code stands for id Software. Doom Wiki lists it beside IDKFA, IDCLIP and the rest of the typed codes.
