Choose your destiny.

— Mortal Kombat  ·  1992

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It gives a menu screen the weight of a prophecy, which is exactly how Mortal Kombat liked to talk to its players: every choice was framed as fate, with Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn looming behind it. Fans quote it as a sly way to ask someone to pick a character, a difficulty or a path, and it belongs with the series' other portentous arcade lines.

Spoilers for Mortal KombatShow the scene

Choose Your Destiny is the title of the difficulty-select screen in Mortal Kombat 3 (Midway, arcade, 1995), where a single player picks how hard the tournament will be before the fighting starts. Wikipedia says the screen appears in single-player mode to allow player-selectable difficulty; the Mortal Kombat Wiki notes that its portal backdrop was later combined with another stage for a hidden fight against Smoke. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 kept the screen, recoloured the portal and added a Master difficulty.
