Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Two words that sell a whole franchise: a chesty, echoing shout that tells you a fight is about to begin. It started as a marketing hook and was lifted into a dance track, which is why plenty of people met it at a club or in a film trailer before they ever held a controller. The deliberate k in Kombat did the rest, and the scream has been the series' sonic logo ever since.

Spoilers for Mortal KombatShow the scene
Mortal Kombat! is not spoken in the 1992 arcade game itself. It is the booming shout in 'Techno Syndrome', the theme by The Immortals, released on the 1994 album Mortal Kombat: The Album and written by Oliver Adams alone. The yell was sampled from the TV commercial for the home versions, which launched together on 13 September 1993, a date billed as Mortal Monday. Actor Kyle Wyatt performed it. The song was adapted for the 1995 film soundtrack, where the scream returns.
