Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The phrase is a challenge before it is a game: the cabinet dares you to prove your strength by hammering buttons until your wrist gives out. Fans use it as a dare for any feat of brute effort, and the name has outlived the minigame itself, resurfacing in later titles, music and memes as shorthand for the early, gloriously blunt Mortal Kombat.

Test Your Might is the bonus minigame of the original Mortal Kombat (Midway, arcade, 1992). Between certain fights the player mashes buttons to fill a meter, then hits Block to break a column of material: wood first, then stone, steel, ruby and finally diamond, each tougher than the last. Wikipedia and the Mortal Kombat Wiki both treat it as an interlude that earns bonus points rather than a fight. It was dropped from Mortal Kombat II, which replaced it with a win tally, but the name came back in later games.
