Mercy

Heroes never die!

— Overwatch • 2016

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

For a character whose job is bringing the dead back, the line is a promise to the team as much as a war cry: the fight is not over while she is flying. It is the defining Mercy catchphrase, loved by her players and groaned at by everyone who has watched a won fight turn around, and it became the standard thing to type when someone gets revived.

Spoilers for OverwatchShow the scene

"Heroes never die!" is the voice line Mercy shouts when she activates her ultimate, Valkyrie, in Blizzard's team shooter Overwatch (released 24 May 2016 with 21 heroes, Mercy among them). The wiki's quote table lists it as the line for herself and her allies when the ability goes off, with a German version, "Helden sterben nicht!", as the line her opponents hear. Mercy is the game's Medic-role support hero, whose Valkyrie suit lets her heal, resurrect and empower teammates. The line gained a second life in the game's NieR: Automata crossover, which gave Mercy the Commander White skin.
