D.Va

Nerf this!

— Overwatch ‧ 2016

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is that D.Va, a pro gamer, answers the community's favourite complaint with the weapon being complained about. It turned a piece of balance-patch slang into a catchphrase that is bigger than the game, and fans still shout it at any change they dislike, tongue in cheek.

Spoilers for OverwatchShow the scene

"Nerf this!" is the voice line D.Va shouts in Overwatch (24 May 2016) when she triggers Self-Destruct, the ultimate that ejects her from her mech, MEKA, and blows it up. The wiki's quote table lists it as the line for D.Va herself and for enemies, while her allies hear "Activating self-destruct sequence!". The Overwatch Wiki describes it as a challenge to the developers to nerf her ultimate and notes that, as of 8 March 2024, Self-Destruct had never been nerfed. It uses a term from online gaming: to nerf is to make a character or weapon weaker through a balance update.
