Keeper’s diary

Itchy. Tasty.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Two words are all it takes to show a mind dissolving: a diary that begins with poker and ends by confusing itching with hunger. The Japanese original is deliberately mangled to mimic infection, which is why the English line stays so strange. It has outlived the game as the horror-fan shorthand for 'you are about to be eaten by something that used to be a person', and fans still say it to each other, usually while scratching.

Spoilers for Resident EvilShow the scene

In the original Resident Evil (1996), the Keeper's Diary sits on a desk in a ground-floor bedroom in the west wing of the Spencer Mansion. It is the journal of the man who looked after the mansion's animals. Starting on May 9, 1998, he records an ordinary week of poker nights and chores, then an itch that will not stop, a swelling back, and a lump of rotten flesh dropping off his arm. The last entry, dated May 19, has him eating dog food and killing a guard named Scott, and it ends on these two words. When the player finishes reading, the keeper, now a zombie, bursts out of the wardrobe behind them.
