You were almost a Jill sandwich!
— Resident Evil · 1996
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Barry has just saved his friend's life and rewards himself with a joke so bad it is perfect: the rescue becomes a deli order. The game was criticised for weak dialogue and voice acting, and fans turned that into affection, with Jill sandwich the best-loved example. The pun belongs to the English localisation, because the Japanese script never says Jill, so the phrase players have repeated for decades was born in translation.

In the Spencer Mansion, Jill Valentine can get trapped in a room whose ceiling begins to come down. If she has not already used the Broken Shotgun to prop it, Barry Burton turns up, kicks the jammed door in and pulls her out in time. The English script has him say it was too close and that she was almost a Jill sandwich. Barry Gjerde voiced Barry in the 1996 original. The Japanese script has him say only that a sandwich was about to be made, with no mention of Jill.
