Jill, here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
'Master of unlocking' is a compliment so stiff it loops back round to charm, and it stands for the whole clumsy, lovable English script of the original game. It also tells you something true about the design: the lockpick makes Jill's route the gentler one, so a throwaway pleasantry from Barry doubles as the game's difficulty setting. Fans still quote the title at anyone with a stubborn door.

Spoilers for Resident EvilShow the scene
Early in the 1996 Resident Evil, after the search of the Spencer Mansion's main hall for the missing Wesker, Barry Burton hands Jill Valentine a lockpick and delivers the line. The pick is a game-mechanics gift: with it Jill can open simple locks that Chris has to find Old Keys for, and it counts as a personal item rather than taking one of her inventory slots. Barry was voiced in the original English release by Barry Gjerde.
