The StarCraft (1998) warning when a Ghost calls down a nuke

Nuclear launch detected.

— StarCraft  ·  1998

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Three words that make a lobby go quiet. The announcement is both threat and punchline: a tense game of cat and mouse in which one cloaked Ghost can hold a whole base hostage. Players type it in chat as a warning or a boast, and it stands in for any looming disaster.

Spoilers for StarCraftShow the scene

Nuclear launch detected plays in StarCraft when a Terran Ghost calls down a nuke. Nukes are built in a nuclear silo, an add-on to the command center, and in the modern version must be guided to the target by a Ghost. Once the strike is called, the target shows as a small red dot to enemies, and the announcement warns whoever is about to be hit. There is a delay before impact, enough time to run units away or hunt down the Ghost.
