Belethor

Everything's for sale my friend. Everything. If I had a sister I'd sell her in a second.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Belethor's eagerness overshoots the reassuring promise that a customer can buy anything. The hypothetical sister makes the pitch memorable by exposing how little he wants to leave outside commerce. The joke is the merchant's appalling enthusiasm, not an actual bargain being offered.

Belethor offers this grotesquely enthusiastic sales pitch in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011). The general-goods merchant in Whiterun pushes the idea that everything has a price into an imaginary family transaction. It is shop dialogue, not evidence that he has a sister or that any such sale happens in the game.
