Ash

You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? Perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility.

— Alien  ·  1979

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The cruellest part is the admiration. Ash is not warning anyone: he is praising the thing that is about to kill them, in the same polite voice he has always used, and that chilly respect is what made the speech famous. Fans quote it for any ruthless, well-built opponent, and the phrase 'perfect organism' became a standard label for the Xenomorph itself.

Spoilers for AlienShow the scene

Aboard the Nostromo in Alien, the crew has discovered that science officer Ash is an android, and Parker has just shouted as much. With Ash's head reconnected so Ripley can question him, he confirms his special order: bring back the life form, priority one, all other priorities rescinded. When Parker demands to know how to kill the creature, Ash answers with the line, and tells Lambert he admires the creature's purity, a survivor unclouded by conscience, remorse or delusions of morality. Ian Holm plays Ash in Ridley Scott's 1979 film.
