Dread it. Run from it. Destiny arrives all the same.

Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It is Thanos introducing himself as an inevitability, and the film's best speech for the villain: calm, almost sympathetic and entirely certain. The last pivot, "I am", turns fate into a person and makes the audience believe it. It has become the quote that sums up the Mad Titan's whole philosophy.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the opening scene aboard the Statesman, the Asgardian refugee ship that Thanos's Black Order has ambushed. Thanos stands over the wrecked survivors and a beaten Thor and tells them he knows what it is to lose, to feel sure you are right and fail anyway. Then he asks to what end they resist: dread it, run from it, destiny arrives all the same, and now it is here. Or, he adds, he is. He then demands the Tesseract or Thor's brother's head.
