Thanos

Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Said gently to a frightened child, over a trinket, it is the cruelest line in the film. Thanos's whole creed fits in a toy knife, and the quiet tone makes it worse. It gives the later Snap an awful gentleness.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018). The line is a flashback. On Gamora's home planet Zen-Whoberi, Thanos finds the young Gamora fighting one of his soldiers and takes her aside. He shows her a knife balanced on his fingertip: pretty, isn't it, perfectly balanced, as all things should be. He lets her try to balance it too. While she is concentrating, his Black Order massacres half the population of her people; her family is among the dead. She keeps the knife, and Thanos adopts her.
