Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A throwaway runner's warning that turns out to be the start of a friendship. Steve is the one lapping, and the joke is that the fastest man alive keeps being polite about it. The film brings it back as a private joke, and by Endgame it is a password between the two of them, and the line fans shout whenever a hero slips in from the side.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), the first line of the movie. Steve Rogers is on a morning jog in Washington, D.C., and keeps lapping a runner he doesn't know, calling out "On your left" as he passes. Sam Wilson, jogging and dreading it, begs him not to say it. After the run Sam jokes that Steve just ran 13 miles in 30 minutes and Steve says he got a late start. The two bond over life after the military; Sam is a Veterans Affairs counselor and ex-Air Force pararescue trooper. Steve says it again on waking in hospital, and Sam says it back in Avengers: Endgame.
