Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The Marvel comics' oldest battle cry, left out of the 2012 film and only half-said in Age of Ultron, finally lands as a quiet order rather than a shout, and the quiet is why it hits. It pays off the whole Infinity Saga: every hero lost to the Blip is back, and Captain America is the one to call them together. Critics and audiences singled the scene out, and the line is the franchise's battle cry in fan edits and reaction clips.

The line closes the portal sequence of Avengers: Endgame (2019), at the Battle of Earth. Thanos's army has arrived, Tony Stark and Thor are down, and Steve Rogers, holding Mjolnir, is left facing the horde. Sam Wilson's voice comes through his earpiece: "On your left." Portals open and the Avengers who vanished in the Blip pour onto the field, with the Guardians, Wakandans, Asgardians and sorcerers. Doctor Strange asks if that's everyone, Wong replies "What, you wanted more?", and Rogers, quietly rather than shouting, gives the order. The Russo brothers chose the quiet delivery.
