Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A war cry that is also a promise: Steve is telling a room of broken people that nothing is off the table, and the film makes him and the others pay for it. It was the film's tagline, then a fan chant, and it works for any moment you decide to go all in. On Vormir it turns from rallying cry to a choice no one wants.

Avengers: Endgame (2019). Five years after the Snap, the surviving Avengers have a plan: use Scott Lang's quantum realm trick to travel back and collect the Infinity Stones before Thanos did. Before the teams split up, Steve Rogers addresses them at the Avengers Compound. He says they lost five years ago, today they can take it all back, and tells each team to get its stone and return it, one round trip each. He closes the speech with the line. The words come back on Vormir, where Natasha and Clint repeat them while deciding who will pay the price for the Soul Stone.
