Commodus

Am I not merciful?

— Gladiator

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The question is never a question. Commodus is a tyrant begging to be told he is generous, and the shout when his sister turns away shows how little power the title actually gives him. The shriek of wounded self-regard became the film's villain signature, and it is quoted for any boss or sibling who threatens someone and expects thanks.

Spoilers for GladiatorShow the scene

In Gladiator (2000), Emperor Commodus is tightening his grip on Rome and on the people around the general Maximus. He tells his sister Lucilla that her son Lucius will stay with him now, and that if she displeases him or takes her own life the boy will die. He adds that she will love him as he loved her and bear him a pure-blooded heir, so that his line will rule for a thousand years. Then he asks whether he is not merciful; Lucilla turns her head away, and he screams it.
