Our interpretation.
A familiar warning about catching one’s death is redirected toward mud. The exaggerated danger makes the invitation indoors comic, while preserving its practical wish to get someone inside. Replacing the expected cold with something messy gives an ordinary expression of concern a peculiar twist.
