I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Lloyd's answer works because he cannot name what he does want, only a whole economy he refuses, and the list-making rhythm is part of the charm. It became a graduation-season staple for anyone defying the career question. Behind the joke is the film's real answer: he wants Diane, and he is sure that is enough.

Spoilers for Say Anything...Show the scene

In Say Anything... (1989), Cameron Crowe's directing debut, underachiever Lloyd Dobler is invited into the home of Diane Court, the valedictorian he is dating, and her father James. The guests ask what he plans to do now that he has graduated. Lloyd rattles off that he does not want to sell, buy or process anything as a career, or repair anything bought, sold or processed, and mentions that he has been kickboxing. He ends by saying he will just hang out with Diane. Moments later, IRS agents arrive for Mr Court.
