Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Mal's whole arc in four words: the man who said he would not fight again chooses to stop running and start making trouble for a cause. The dry understatement is classic Firefly, and it works as a promise, a threat and a joke at once. Fans took it as the show's motto, a rallying cry for anyone refusing to be tidied up, and it has been shared as a slogan since the film.

Spoilers for SerenityShow the scene

Near the end of Serenity (2005, released in the US on 30 September 2005), the film that continues the cancelled Firefly series, the crew has learned what the Alliance did on the planet Miranda and why it wants River back. Mal Reynolds, who has spent years running from trouble since losing the war at Serenity Valley, gathers everyone on the ship. He says the report was buried for twelve years, that someone has to speak for the dead, and that the Alliance will try again to make people "better". He ends his speech with the line, and the plan is to broadcast the truth to every world through Mr. Universe's transmitter.
