Yeah, well. The Dude abides.
— The Big Lebowski ‧ 1998
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The Dude has solved little, won nothing and lost his rug, and the line is his whole philosophy: keep going, stay level, let the nonsense wash past. The Stranger's follow-up makes it a blessing rather than a shrug. Fans turned it into a greeting, a bumper sticker and a way to answer any bad week with a calm nod, and it is why the Dude is read as an unlikely folk hero.

Spoilers for The Big LebowskiShow the scene
The Big Lebowski (1998) ends at the bowling alley, where the Dude runs into the Stranger, the drawling cowboy narrator who has been commenting on the story from the edges. The Dude has just come through a chaotic stretch that ended with Walter scattering a friend's ashes into the wind. The Stranger tells him to take it easy, and the Dude signs off with this line. The Stranger then turns to the audience and repeats it, saying he takes comfort in knowing the Dude is out there. The character was partly inspired by film producer Jeff Dowd, and the Coens built the story to wander like a Raymond Chandler novel.
