Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The film's ending reframes Batman as the city's scapegoat by choice, and Gordon's lines are the benediction. Fans still use it as the tidy summary of the whole trilogy and of any person who takes the blame for the greater good. It also says the film's title out loud, naming the Dark Knight at last.

At the end of The Dark Knight (2008), Batman takes the blame for the murders Harvey Dent committed, so Gotham can keep its white knight. As he runs off, Commissioner Gordon is left with his young son, who asks why Batman is running. Gordon answers that the city has to chase him. In a voice-over, he says Batman is the hero Gotham deserves but not the one it needs right now. He adds that they will hunt him because he can take it, and calls him a silent guardian, a dark knight.
