Joker

I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve.

— The Dark Knight  ·  2008

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A villain's argument that he is no deviation, only the first to say what everyone is capable of. 'Ahead of the curve' turned a statistics phrase into a menace, and fans quote it as a wry defence of any behaviour that looks monstrous but may be where things are heading. It is the sharpest line in the film's central debate about whether people are good only when the world lets them be.

Spoilers for The Dark KnightShow the scene

In the same hospital scene in The Dark Knight (2008), the Joker works on a grieving Harvey Dent. He tells Dent that the city's heroes are freaks the public will cast out like lepers the moment they are no longer needed, and that the 'civilized' will eat each other when the chips are down. This line is his sign-off to the argument. Dent, half his face ruined, is persuaded to hand his fate to his two-headed coin.
