Joker

Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I'm an agent of chaos.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The Joker's whole philosophy in one speech: people trust a plan, even a monstrous one, and he exists to take that comfort away. It is the line on every poster-board and tattoo for the film, and 'agent of chaos' became the self-description of anyone gleefully stirring things up. The film also used it as a tagline.

Spoilers for The Dark KnightShow the scene

In a Gotham hospital, after the explosion that killed Rachel Dawes and burned half of Harvey Dent's face, the Joker meets the disillusioned Dent and persuades him to take the law into his own hands. Speaking to Dent, he explains himself: nobody panics when horrors go according to plan, but kill one mayor and everyone loses their mind. He pitches chaos as the only fair thing there is. Dent then leaves his decisions to his scarred coin and goes after those he blames for Rachel's death.
